I'm still thinking about the awesome double cheeseburger & fries from Unconventional Diner. Even though it was way too much to eat in one sitting. Here's a tip for next time. The kid's cheeseburger is the exact same burger. Get the kid's single burger if you can't eat the the double burger. Oh, and make sure that you get an extra side of that sexy sauce as a dip for those crispy fries. It was all very tasty! We walked in for an early weekday dinner without a reservation. They were able to seat us with no wait. It's such a warm and inviting atmosphere. The service was really good, and all our questions were answered. We started with the Pot Pie Poppers. They are like small chicken croquettes. That's a good thing for me because I like them. It didn't really have the taste or texture of a chicken pot pie (IMO). They were tasty little appetizer bites. My husband really liked the Cuban Stew. I tried some of the pork, and I can totally see why. The sauce had a nice little kick of spice. The flavors were different than your traditional Cuban fare, but it all mixed together very well with the turmeric rice, black beans, olives, green onions, and slaw. There was even a sweet plantain that he thought was the bomb. It was definitely not one of those frozen plantains. Thank goodness for that. Everything was prepared well. I was happy that he was happy with it. It was a great choice for dinner. They also have an everyday brunch from 9am to 3:45pm that I'd like to try someday. The whole neighborhood around it is very historical. We ended up walking through Blagden Alley to view public art after our dinner. We will hopefully return in the future. Highly recommended!

I'm glad I gave this place another try! I booked for Sunday brunch pretty last minute for a large party. Even still we had two extra people in our party unplanned and were still accommodated quickly. The managers and waitstaff were very attentive and quickly delivered on every request. For drinks we loved the Hawaiian Punch. Entrees people really enjoyed include the Chicken and Waffles, Loaded Breakfast Biscuits, Pineapple Shrimp and Grits, and the Double Cheeseburger. I had the shrimp and grits and enjoyed the unique take on the dish. I would get it again if I was in the mood for it. The chicken and waffles were pretty delicious. I'd probably order them on my next visit. But I'd probably order a side of grits because I'd want a little of both dishes! My brother swears by the double cheeseburger. My dad loved the breakfast biscuits, but it's not my favorite dish. For dessert we ordered both the carrot cake and cheesecake. They were both great, but the carrot cake is my preference. But if you love cheesecake I'd recommend it.

We were so lucky to have stayed so close to here. We came unexpectedly at 8am on a Saturday. Even then, there were people here eating breakfast. We split the blueberry pancakes and the loaded breakfast biscuits with a side of grits. The loaded biscuits and side of grits may be the best brunch food I've had in a long time. The service was also super friendly. I wish I ate here every morning when I was here!

I've been absent from Yelp for a minute but had to return to let you know about this joint. Most notably, get a reservation and the brunch menu and dinner menu is a little different...enough to warrant a decision about visiting before or after 3:45pm. *I'd vote for pre-3:45pm but dinner is great too. I'm not a meatloaf person but their's was wonderful. Forgive the missing bites from each plate...I'm impatient and was starving lol. The pasta and seafood were also delicious. For me, service is key and they did not disappoint. I won't spoil it, just go if you're in the area. 100% legit.

During our most recent trip to DC, finding a decent restaurant was sometimes challenging because the reviews can have thousands of reviews but the food is flavorless and mediocre but service is great. On our first night we went to Unconventional Diner and the reviewers got this one right. The decor really fits the atmosphere and the ambiance of the restaurant. Upfront, let me say that the noise level is loud so be prepared to talk loudly and listen even harder. Moving on, our waiter was great, provided great customer service and was attentive the entire evening. He was able to answer all of our questions in a thoughtful and concise manner. He made his recommendations based on other patron's feedback and his own person experience. I decided to go with the Double Cheeseburger medium well as did my daughter. The service was quick and we promptly got our food. I don't say this lightly, for the price, my burger was one of the best burgers I have ever had and the portion size was decent. The flavor was there, the crispy outside and proper temperature made this exceptional. I was impressed from the first bite to the last so much that we went back again!! Overall, definitely the best restaurant we went to during our trip and I would definitely recommend this to be one of your first stops when in this area!
